Verda's mother, Anna (Norman) Oates, was a schoolteacher in Elk Garden, played the violin, was active in her church, and wrote poetry. Her poems were published in anthologies, newspapers (Clarksburg Exponent, Cumberland Daily News, Grant County Press), and Christian magazines (Christian Observer, Ledger) and were also read by Evelyn Gardiner on KDKA radio's Home Forum. We are blessed to have hundreds of her poems, both typed and handwritten. She made notations of when they were written and published, and she even saved her rejection letters!
